Digital Detox: 24 Hours to Reclaim Your Attention
How a day of unplugging can restore focus, deepen connections, and bring unexpected joy
This piece was written when Second Act Shift was focused on digital wellness. I'm expanding the lens now, but the core idea still fits: designing your life with intention rather than just reacting to it.
Could you go 24 hours without your phone?
Tonight at sunset, thousands worldwide will unplug for 24 hours during the 17th annual Global Day of Unplugging.
Exhausted by the constant pull of notifications, emails, and social media, I helped launch this project with colleagues at Reboot, an arts and culture non-profit reimagining Jewish traditions.
What started as a conversation about reclaiming the ancient practice of a weekly day of rest has grown into a global movement—embraced by tech leaders, creatives, and even celebrities like Martha Stewart, Ashton Kutcher, and Sergey Brin—all seeking a meaningful break from digital life.
In today's topsy-turvy world, a pause like this feels needed more than ever. I can't wait to hit a trail with my daughters and get lost for a few hours.
If you're unplugging, set yourself up for success:
- Plan your day in advance
- Arrange social events at specific times and places
- Print maps if necessary
- Let loved ones know you’ll be offline
Wishing those who join in a joyous, restful day offline. Get into nature (or stay in bed), take a forest bath (or a long nap), and give yourself space to truly breathe.
See you on the other side! 📵
